OVERVIEW OF APPOINTMENT OF U3A CHAPLAIN
The membership of U3A Rockhampton and District Inc voted overwhelmingly
in favour of the appointment of a voluntary chaplain. Accordingly, U3A
Rockhampton is seeking the services of a suitable person to provide
a listening ear and show care and compassion to U3A members in times
of grief and loss, sickness, and loneliness or in need of someone to
talk to about matters of concern to them in the circumstances of life.
This may involve hospital and/or home visitation.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The chaplain:
• Will have experience in chaplaincy, counselling, social work
or a pastoral care position. Associated qualifications will be considered
favourably but are not essential.
• Will have an understanding of the circumstances senior citizens
face when transitioning from occupations to retirement with specific
reference to social interaction. Membership of U3A will be required
and the chaplain must be aware of and comply with the aims and objectives
of U3A Rockhampton and District Inc.
• Will practice compassion and empathy which conveys to care recipients
that their circumstances are shared and valued, by connecting deeply
with the individual. The values of respect and acceptance for the person
and their values, beliefs and world-views are paramount.
• Will, with regard to spiritual care, offer this support in such
a way that upholds the established culture and values of the recipient.
Spiritual care shall be provided to a U3A Rockhampton member ONLY at
their request and with their consent. U3A is a non-religious organisation
and while the chaplain may be a person of faith, they are not to promote
their religious and/or denominational beliefs in carrying out the duties
of the role. For example, should discussion of religious matters be
initiated by the U3A member, they can respond accordingly. If a U3A
member asked the chaplain to pray for them or with them, then that would
be appropriate.
• Will maintain the dignity of the recipient, which shall be of
prime consideration at ALL times. Dignity is promoted when individuals
are enabled, to the best of their ability, to exercise control, make
choices and feel involved in the decision making that underpins their
care.
• Will respect the confidentiality of all matters discussed with
them, within normal legal guidelines for such roles.
• Will not offer professional services. Where a need for professional
services is identified, the chaplain will recommend that these services
be sought by the member.
